OUR STORY

Brewing great beer, new ideas, and renewal in downtown Miramichi.

New Maritime Beer Company’s three owners, Brent Garrish, Matt Hutt, and Adam Lordon, are proud Miramichiers and lifelong friends, who first met in grade school when they played hockey together on the Atom “B” Bunsmaster Ironmen. While none were destined for the NHL, their friendship and involvement in various aspects of the community continued through their youth and graduation as part of the James M Hill High School Class of 2002.

After high school each left the river banks of the Miramichi to pursue their post-secondary education (and a healthy dose of traveling and adventure) and by 2015 they had each found their way back, a little wiser and with a few good stories to tell.

Preliminary discussions of what would become the New Maritime Beer Company took place, as most good things do, over several craft beers at a Christmas party in 2017 in Adam’s kitchen. When it still seemed like a good idea in the New Year, they got to work building the plan.

The goal was to bring the first full scale craft-brewery to Miramichi, and to create a brand and experience that put a fresh spin on our laid back Maritime lifestyle and world famous Miramichi hospitality. Under that vision the New Maritime Beer Company was born. Our paper boat logo, which is both contemporary and nostalgic, speaks to our vision.

With the concept established, next up was finding a location. As part of Miramichi’s newer generation of local entrepreneurs it was important to the guys to find a location that would not only allow them to brew delicious beer, but to support the ongoing renewal of the city’s downtowns. Ultimately the brewery’s location at 55 Newcastle Blvd, which has been the Bridgeview Motors car dealership decades ago, then an auto glass shop, and which had been closed for years, was the perfect fit.

So after two years of planning and several months of extensive renovations, the New Maritime Taproom opened in January 2020, and the brewery came online in March.

Meet the Team

Adam Lordon

Co-Owner

An enthusiastic foodie and traveler, Adam always has his eye on what’s new and exciting in the culinary and craft beer worlds, and he always finds time on his travels for a little market research. With experience in media, marketing, and lifestyle television Adam is passionate about ensuring creativity and quality in our beer and our promotions, and curating the New Maritime experience in our taproom or wherever you happen to be. He takes the lead on spreading the word about the good ship New Maritime and our brews, and is never short on words so if you see him around the brewery and wanna talk beer, marketing, or downtown renewal you better have a pint in hand.

Matt Hutt

Co-Owner

A Chiropractor by trade and our resident family man, Matt and his wife, both Mount Allison grads, have two kids, two dogs and a garage where the origins of New Maritime brewing can be traced. Matt has been experimenting with craft beer recipes out there for years, and has been honing his skills and recipes as Head Brewer David’s right hand man. Matt is also a music and vinyl lover and can curate a mean playlist to go with any craft beer variety to set the perfect atmosphere in our onsite taproom or wherever the party goes. He is also an avid gym-goer to balance out all those pints, and a huge sports fan that will watch anything from hockey, to basketball, to tennis – beer in hand of course!

Brent Garrish

Co-Owner

A true entrepreneur, Brent is a jack of all trades (well at least two, electrical & plumbing!) who is the ultimate utility player for New Maritime. Brent has learned the entrepreneurial ropes from his parents, working with them in the family business over the past decade, and can keep anything on track from machines, to logistics, to finances. Brent is also a well-known figure in the NB rugby community, playing and coaching multiple teams, including coaching and mentoring local high school youth for well over a decade. Although no stranger to a cold beer, Brent is relatively new to the world of craft and has been a quick convert who now can’t help but spread the word about the wide variety of flavours and experiences in the New Maritime world.

David Draper

Head Brewer

To brew quality beer you need a quality brewer, that why after searching all across the country New Maritime was proud to recruit David Draper as our Head Brewer. David comes to New Maritime from a Toronto area brewery where he has developed a strong reputation for quality, including winning a Gold Medal at the Canadian Brewing Awards in 2018. He brews a wide range of beers, and has a love of all things hops. With many years of experience in brewing, David is excited about his move to the east coast and looking forward to continuing to design great beers, for a whole new crowd. And as a new Miramichier with a love of hockey, curling, fishing, and darts, we are convinced he was born for life on the river.
